“Son of God” Reflecting on the Sacrifice of Jesus

Music has the power to move us, to inspire us, and to connect us with a higher power. For centuries, music has played an important role in religious worship and devotion, providing a means for believers to express their faith and connect with God. One such example is the song “Son of God” by John Pape, a powerful and moving worship and praise song that is perfect for Easter and Good Friday services. The song focuses on the redeeming sacrifice of Jesus the Son of God.

Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4

The Origins of “Son of God”

“Son of God” was written by John Pape, a contemporary Christian musician and songwriter. The lyrics of the song are based on the Bible verse 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, which speaks of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to Pape, the inspiration for the song came from his own personal experience of faith and the desire to express his love and devotion to Jesus Christ.

The Lyrics of “Son of God”

Verse 1

He's the One
Who died so I could live
By His blood
He gave all he could give

The opening verse of the song speaks of the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross for all of humanity. He died so that we could live, and it is through His blood that we are saved. This sacrifice is the ultimate act of love, and the song reminds us of the price that was paid for our redemption.

Chorus

Son of God
Prince of Peace
I bow down at your feet
Holy and Righteous Lord

The chorus of the song is a declaration of faith and reverence for Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He is the Prince of Peace, the One who brings us true and lasting peace. We bow down at His feet, recognizing His holiness and righteousness.

Verse 2

At the Cross
The final deed was done
It's His gift
That's free to everyone

The second verse speaks of the final deed that was done on the cross, and the gift of salvation that is freely available to all who believe. This gift is the ultimate expression of grace and mercy, and it is something that we can never earn or deserve. The song reminds us that it is only through Jesus Christ that we can be saved.

Bridge

Trust in Him
Believe He's alive
Risen from the dead

The bridge of the song encourages us to trust in Jesus and believe that He is alive. He rose from the dead, overcoming sin and death, and offering us the hope of eternal life. This is the central message of the Christian faith, and it is something that we can celebrate and proclaim with joy.

The final chorus of the song repeats the declaration of faith and reverence for Jesus Christ. We bow down at His feet, recognizing Him as the Son of God and the Prince of Peace. This is a powerful and moving conclusion to the song, and it is something that can inspire us to worship and praise God.

On The Third Day – Song Story

The main reason I write worship songs like On The Third Day is to express through music the wonder and greatness of God. As I think about the song On The Third Day here are some thoughts that hopefully share the song’s story.

The most important event in the history of mankind is the miracle that happen nearly 2000 years ago in Jerusalem. There was a man who was also God incarnate named Jesus. He had a three year ministry that ended by the most heinous punishment ever devised by man. The method of death was the Roman practice of crucifixion on a wooded cross.

Jesus was put on the cross by the religious leaders of the day. At the time they refused to see who Jesus was. As a result of their ignorance, Jesus died on the cross then was buried in a tomb. Now for most any other human that would be the end of the story. However, Jesus was in no way ordinary. The miracle of resurrection occurred after three days in a sealed tomb.

The resurrection of Jesus is God’s gift to mankind to offer one final sin offering. Jesus became the sacrificial lamb to take away the sins of the world. You only need to believe this in faith to receive atonement and be set free from the punishment of sin. This is the good news that every Christian now has hope for heaven .

Song Lyrics

From all splendor and majesty
Jesus came from heaven to earth
He brought a gift greater than gold
worth much more than I could afford

On the third day
the Son did rise
On the third day
My hope shined bright
On the third day
My Lord is alive

Jesus hung upon Calvary's cross
Crucified to save mankind
He was reviled and spit upon
Paid full price for all of my sins

On the third day
the Son did rise
On the third day
My hope shined bright
On the third day
My Lord is alive

His disciples went to the grave
They neared the tomb where he was laid
Looking inside and seeing no one
For the risen Lord is alive

On the third day
the Son did rise
On the third day
My hope shined bright
On the third day
My Lord is alive

Why I wrote On The Third Day?

On the Third Day was written because I wanted to express in song one of the greatest events in the history of the world. The song starts out with the humility of Jesus leaving heaven. His gold was to bring a gift worth more than everything a person could imagine. The Bible speaks many time regarding the three day period between death and resurrection. As the song progresses I wanted to paint a picture of the terrible way Jesus died. The chorus of the song however speak of hope. Jesus without sin became the perfect sacrifice to take away sin. The proof came on the third day where Jesus is alive. The bridge of the song is about the witnesses to the miracle. The tomb where Jesus was place was empty. It was exactly as Jesus predicted. The hope is the song brings to remembrance of this amazing historical act and the hope every Christian has.

What inspired the song On The Third Day?

The song is inspired by a combination of several bible verses. Here are ones that stand out in regards to the song itself

In this song it is my hope that the individual that sings these words will have a fore knowledge of what it will be like in heaven. Christian devotion to God start now. Let us give praise and honor to God as Almighty Majesty.

About This Song

This song is inspired by scriptures found in the Bible. When a building is constructed one of the most important elements is the cornerstone. This is the first piece that is placed down. It is important because it become the primary reference for the entire building. If the cornerstone is placed incorrectly it will affect the integrity of the the building. The cornerstone is this song refers to Jesus. Jesus is the chief cornerstone upon which the church is built. Unfortunately, for unbelievers the cornerstone becomes a rock or offence or a stumbling block. During the time when Jesus was on earth the religious leaders eyes where blinded and were unable to see Jesus for who he was. Jesus brought salvation to the world. But for the religious leader Jesus was offensive and a stumbling block and the adamantly rejected Him. This resulted in the the most heinous earthly punishment of crucifixion. This song is about in individuals today and their relation and belief in Jesus. For the believer there is great comfort, for the non believer it is a warning.

Lyrics

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord
Seated on the throne
You are worthy of all praise
bowing down I honor you

Only Sovereign Lord
At Your feet I fall
Only Sovereign Lord
You are above all

Mighty, Mighty, is the Lamb
High and lifted up
You're the Savior of my soul
By Your blood I've overcome

Only Sovereign Lord
At Your feet I fall
Only Sovereign Lord
You are above all

I surrender my life to you
I surrender my life to you

Only Sovereign Lord
At Your feet I fall
Only Sovereign Lord
You are above all

About This Song

The meaning of the word sovereign is “a supreme ruler”. That is who the Lord Jesus is. Also, there is only one Lord we need to follow. That is where the title comes, Only Sovereign Lord. The song starts out exalting Jesus as a holy Lord in His rightful place on the throne. This speaks of his royalty and position to rule. When looking to Jesus the appropriate response in worship. In the song this act is shown honor through bowing at his feet and lifting him up.

Only Sovereign Lord – Song Story

The main reason I write worship songs like Only Sovereign Lord is to be a blessing and resource for the Christian church. As I ponder about the song Only Sovereign Lord here are some answers to questions that hopefully share the song’s story.

The meaning of the word sovereign is “a supreme ruler”. That is who the Lord Jesus is. Also, there is only one Lord we need to follow. That is where the title comes, Only Sovereign Lord.

Song Lyrics

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord
Seated on the throne
You are worthy of all praise
bowing down I honor you

Only Sovereign Lord
At Your feet I fall
Only Sovereign Lord
You are above all

Mighty, Mighty, is the Lamb
High and lifted up
You're the Savior of my soul
By Your blood I've overcome

Only Sovereign Lord
At Your feet I fall
Only Sovereign Lord
You are above all

I surrender my life to you
I surrender my life to you

Only Sovereign Lord
At Your feet I fall
Only Sovereign Lord
You are above all

The song starts out exalting Jesus as a holy Lord in His rightful place on the throne. This speaks of his royalty and position to rule. When looking to Jesus the appropriate response in worship. In the song this act is shown honor through bowing at his feet. In Act 4:24 it is written

“When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.”

The role of the Christian worshipper is to give honor and praise. We are also called to place him above everything.

In the second verse the song reminds the worshiper the greatest thing done for mankind. Jesus is the Lamb that was slain for our sins. The amazing thing is that this Lamb is mighty is strength. Through the blood of Jesus comes salvation. Our salvation allows us to overcome sin and death. But there is one thing every person must do to receive this gift.

We find that response in the bridge of the song. Only when a person surrenders to Jesus can they experience true salvation. John the Baptist so eloquently said

“Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

We are designed to worship God. The fall makes this act difficult. However, the Mighty Lamb Jesus who is the “Only Sovereign Lord” provides people a way of salvation. For this honor him by bowing down at the feet of Jesus who sits on the throne.

Why I wrote Only Sovereign Lord?

There will be a day in the future where everyone will bow down and acknowledge that Jesus is Lord. In this song the picture I want to paint is what that would be for Christ followers. The attributes of the Lord are many. He is Holy, He is worthy and He is mighty. Our response is to acknowledge that he is the one and only sovereign Lord. The worshippers response is to fall down and bow at his feet. That is an act of submission to His rule.

What inspired the song Only Sovereign Lord?

The song Only Sovereign Lord is inspired by a combination of several bible verses.  Here are ones that stand out in regards to the song itself

Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
While I live I will praise the Lord;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

PSALM 146 1-2

“And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are your works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are your ways, thou King of saints.”

“Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the LORD our maker”

Psalm 95:6

Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped.
